Wednesday – August 22, 2007

This morning I got up, did some homework, and went to Technology class. It was a pretty slow class, we didn’t do very much, but it was fine. Pilar got hit by a car crossing the road! Like a week ago. She didn’t break anything but her leg was bruised and swollen for a while... But she’s healing up now. I think she’s going to go with us to the tango show tomorrow night.

After class, I went home for lunch. Before lunch, I took a long walk around the neighborhood, just to kind of find out what’s around. It was so nice out today! I walked down to the little TKD school, but it’s just a gym with aerobics classes, they don’t have TKD anymore. But I’m probably going to try out Kung Fu with Johnny tonight, so that should be fun.

I also found the Protestant church, which is about five blocks from the house. I’m planning to go to service either Sunday morning or Sunday afternoon... It depends on what happens Saturday night. I think this Saturday is the hike in the Sierras, but I’m not sure.

I probably walked around 25 blocks, but I made it back to the house in time to eat lunch and talk to Andrew for a little bit before I left for school. Then I had Literature class, which was really good. We’re talking about Esteban Echeverría’s “El Matadero” – considered to be the first piece of Argentina literature (well, prose) and a critism of the government of Juan Manuel de Rosas in the 1830s. It’s a really interesting story! Very sarcastic, which I love.

After Lit class, I went down to CRI and confirmed with Johnny about Kung Fu class tonight. Then I went home and did some laundry – so I would have something to wear to Kung Fu class tonight. Johnny and his friend Eje came to pick me up around 7:45 pm, and we went to the Kung Fu school. It’s a little dance room right above an indoor basketball court, but the professor is really awesome and definitely knows his stuff. The class was absolutely amazing! I’m going to hurt so bad tomorrow... But it is definitely worth the trip!

I recognized a few of the people there. Johnny, obviously. Marcos is the tutor of David, the Brazilian who lives with Amelia. Mateas is... someone’s tutor, I don’t know who, but I recognize him from the “welcome asado” at the UBP. And Florencia, a redheaded girl who is the tutor of Mariana, one of the other Brazilians. She is so nice! She’s coming on the hike in the Sierras, so hopefully I will be able to talk to her more then. And Federico, I don’t think I know him but I think maybe I saw him at Vicky’s party or something. Who knows.

But they are all really nice and don’t mind stopping to help me when I have no idea what we’re doing. It’s very complicated because first of all I don’t know any Kung Fu terminology, and secondly I don’t know a lot of the Spanish vocabulary: kick, punch, stance, etc. are not exactly common theme words. But it was a really good time!

So now I’m about to take a seriously hot shower and go to bed.
