Che Guevera's childhood home in Alta Gracia
This morning we had to be at school at 9:30 am for our study trip to Alta Gracia. The first place we went was Che Guevera’s childhood home. It was really interesting to me! We watched a short documentary on his childhood and his involvement in the Latin American revolutions, and then toured his house, which is now a museum. There were letters from Fidel Castro, a replica of the motorcycle that he used to tour around South America, baby clothes... It was really amazing. It was interesting to me that, here, Che Guevera is a very current topic. He would be young enough to still be alive! There are still childhood friends of his living in Alta Gracia, and his wife and children still live in Cuba... It seems so distant, when we study him as part of South American history in the USA. But I mean, my history professor’s cousin is the best friend of his Argentinian ex-girlfriend! Very personal, very contemporary. Not something out of a history textbook, but a real live person that was alive just a few years ago!
Anyway, after that we went to lunch at a restaurant that served food diente libre – eat as much as you want! It’s not a buffet really though... There is a buffet of salads and desserts, but for the main courses the waiters come around with trays of asado (meat, sausage, etc.), chicken and pasta and you take what you want.
After lunch, we went to the Jesuit estancia of Alta Gracia. It’s main feature is a huge water reserve that the Jesuits built to use as a source of power for a hydraulic underground mill. It’s also got lots of classic American Baroque architecture and art. It’s really beautiful! They wouldn’t let us take pictures inside the rooms though, which I thought was sad.
Then we came back to Córdoba (around 7:00 pm). I rested a little until Lucas and Ceci came over for dinner. Gabi and Fer and Allyson also came over a little while later. Lucas stuffed a whole chicken with ham, cheese, vegetables, and other deliciousness. While that was baking, we ate picantes (finger food – mostly chips, things like that) and socialized. Around 10:30 pm, we finally sat down to eat.
At 1:00 am, Allyson and I went to get ready to go out. We picked up Amelia on the way, and around 2:30 am we finally got to Bar Brasilero – a Brazilian Bar in Barrio General Paz. There we met up with Vane, Viki, and a bunch of kids from school. It was a really good time!
I ended up drinking a few glasses of tap water while we were there, though... NOT a good idea!
Allyson and Amelia and I finally left around 6:00 am to go home. What a great night!
